Ep. 40 - Root Hog, or Die

Ep. 40 - Root Hog, or Die

Where did this statement come from? Maybe a farmer, who had run out of food for his hog with no money to buy more hog food, turned his hog out into the fields and woods to forage for himself.
The hog would find acorns in the woods to help satisfy his hunger and then he would have to root for more dinner.
And so it is “Root, hog, or die.” It is simple, some effort must be forthcoming or the hog will die.
So it was during the Great Depression. It was “root hog or die” for people, as well as pigs.

Root hog, or die

Sometimes I forget how lucky we are even if it doesn’t always feel that way. Thank you for the reminder.
